Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2025 · Effective immediately

The short version

Rewritr collects no personal data whatsoever. All text processing happens locally in your browser. No rules, no page content, no usage patterns, and no identifiable information are ever transmitted to any server.

1. Who we are

Rewritr is a Chrome browser extension developed and maintained by Ashutosh Kumar Singh (ashutoshsingh5888@gmail.com). The extension is accessible at rewritr.app.

2. What data Rewritr does NOT collect

Rewritr does not collect, store, transmit, or process:

  • The content of any webpage you visit
  • The text you enter into rules (phrase or replacement fields)
  • Your browsing history or visited URLs
  • Personal identifiers (name, email, IP address, device ID)
  • Usage analytics or telemetry of any kind
  • Crash reports or error logs sent externally

3. What data is stored locally

Rewritr stores the following data only on your own device, using the Chrome Extension Storage API (chrome.storage.sync):

  • Your replacement rules (phrase, rewrite, and flag settings)
  • Global option settings (dynamic mode, skip tags, contenteditable toggle)
  • Bookmark / saved rule sets

If you are signed into Chrome with a Google account, Chrome's built-in sync may replicate this data across your own devices. This syncing is performed by Google, governed by Google's Privacy Policy, and is entirely outside Rewritr's control. Rewritr has no access to this synced data.

4. Permissions explained

PermissionWhy it is needed
storageTo save your rules and settings between browser sessions.
activeTabTo access the content of the currently active tab when you click Apply.
scriptingTo inject the replacement script into the page when you click Apply.
<all_urls> host permissionAllows the content script to be pre-loaded on all pages so Dynamic mode can start observing immediately without a round-trip permission prompt.

No permission grants network access and none is used to exfiltrate data.

5. Third-party services

The Rewritr extension itself uses no third-party SDKs, analytics packages, or external APIs. The Rewritr website (rewritr.app) is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare may collect standard server access logs (IP address, user agent, timestamp) as part of their hosting service. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy for details. The website also loads fonts from Google Fonts; see Google's Privacy Policy.

6. Children's privacy

Rewritr is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from children.

7. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Rewritr after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
